What: Local artist, Professor, and NEIU student Lani Montreal will perform her one-person production, with musicians, of Anak ni Tapia: Leaving Mother.

Anak ni Tapia: Leaving Mother is an effort to take audiences on a personal and poignant journey through memory, identity, and reconciliation. The 80-minute performance unpacks the complexities of living life as a queer Filipina immigrant, a daughter living in the shadow of a larger-than-life celebrity mother, and a woman discovering her own voice..

Tickets are $30.00 and include a delicious , and lots of fun with a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, and great conviviality!

All proceeds support the College Undergraduate Scholars Program (CUSP), supporting our students on the CUSP of success by funding research and creative activity experiences for our students with NEIU faculty. These experiences are truly transformative for our students, giving them a leg up in seeking admission to top graduate schools and career opportunities.

Lani T. Montreal writes to create her home in the diaspora. She is a queer feminist Filipina writer, performer, educator, and community activist based in Chicago, whose works have been published/produced in North America, Asia, and in cyberspace. Lani has worked as a playwright and resident artist with CIRCA-Pintig, Chicago Danztheatre, and Free Street Theatre. Her play Panther in the Sky, which premiered May 2024 at Chicago Danztheatre was described by Buzz Stage critic Wesley David as “a testament to the power of empathy, compassion, and solidarity in the face of unspeakable tragedy. It is a play that challenges us to confront the harsh realities of gun violence while inspiring us to act and make a difference in the world.” Montreal is a 2-time 3Arts Residency Awardee (2009 and 2016), 2017 alumni of the VONA Writers of Color Workshop, and 2024 Links Hall Co-MISSION Artist Fellow. She was a semi-finalist for the Dramatist Guild 2023 Fellowship Award, and named First Runner Up for Best Playwright in the 2024 Chicago Reader’s Best of Chicago. Lani has an MFA in Creative Writing from Roosevelt University and she has been teaching writing since 2009 at Malcolm X College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago. She received the NISOD Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Texas -Austin in 2020. Best of all, Lani is 3-credits and a capstone away from getting her second master's degree in Linguistic from 91Porn.
