Graphic Design, Minor /academics/college-of-arts-and-sciences/departments/art-design/graphic-design-minor Graphic Design, Minor

The Graphic Design minor will introduce students to the elements and principles of design, develop their visual communication skills, and gain technical skills for the development of print and digital media. The curriculum focuses on equipping students to be able to use design skills to supplement other areas of study. Students are given the tools to create compelling and effective visuals that communicate messages clearly. The minor consists of seven total courses—four core courses, and three electives that students can tailor to gain more experience in either print or digital medias.

Admission requirements: A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.

For more information about the Graphic Design minor, please contact Professor Lauren Meranda at l-meranda@neiu.edu.

Vesna Misoska Fri, 09/02/2022 - 15:30 Department Art + Design Art + Design Affiliation College of Arts and Sciences Type Undergraduate Minor Location Main Campus

A minor in Graphic Design is intended to reach three main student groups (although it is open to all majors): Studio Art majors, Business/Marketing majors, and Computer Science majors. Graphic Design and these three areas of study are closely related in a professional setting and introduce students to skills that will enhance their marketability post-graduation.

Studio Art Majors

Studio Art majors with a minor in Graphic Design would gain supplementary skills in digital media development, visual communication and typography. Students would be able to select a Graphic Design elective that best suits their area of interest. For instance, a printmaking student may want to take the Letterpress elective or a photography student may want to take Contemporary Design to see how photography is and can be used in today’s design industry.

Business and Marketing Majors

Business/Marketing professionals often work very closely with graphic designers to develop consumer-side content. Many marketing professionals are expected to be able to produce high-quality graphics for both print and digital media. A minor in graphic design would give students the opportunity to become more well-rounded professionals, as well as gain first-hand insight into the design process, which will make them more successful in working with designers in the future.

Computer Science Majors

Computer science and graphic design are closely intertwined in user interface and user experience (UI/UX) design for digital products. A minor in graphic design for computer science students will equip them with both the technical skills to design and develop high quality, intuitive digital products, such as desktop and mobile applications. Taking classes in typography and visual design will provide students with the skills to develop more soundly designed projects.

The Graphic Design minor provides students with applicable skills to pursue positions in fields such as:

  • Front End Development and Web Design
  • User Experience Design
  • User Interface Design
  • General Graphic Design
  • Videography and Video Editing
  • Digital Fabrication
  • 3D Design CAD/CAM
  • Industrial Design
  • Motion Design
  • Advertising
  • Marketing
  • Branding

For more detailed career information, visit the U.S. Department of Labor .
