CMT Scholarship Opportunities (Fall 2024)

Brommel Scholarship Notes

The Department of Communication, Media and Theatre has six Brommel scholarships we can award each year. The eligibility criteria, which are determined by the donor, differ for each scholarship. Please read the descriptions carefully!
Fall 2024 deadline for submission is Oct. 18, 2024.
Students must be declared majors in Communication, Media and Theatre.
Eligibility is determined by the hours completed at the time of application (and not by the end of the semester).
If eligible, students can apply for more than one scholarship.
To obtain a recommendation from a CMT faculty member or advisor, email them with your request and include this link to the CMT Scholarship Recommendation Form. Also be sure to identify the scholarship(s) for which you are applying.
To obtain your current Degree Evaluation, log into NEIUport and follow these steps. If applying for more than one scholarship, only one copy of your current degree evaluation is needed.

Brommel-Adams-Bell-Jordan Scholarship ($2,000)

Eligibility:

Senior-level student (90+ hours completed at the time of application) or
Graduate student enrolled in CMT graduate program
Declared major in Communication, Media and Theatre
Minimum GPA of 3.0
Preference given to students who demonstrate financial need, participate in the University Honors Program, and/or participate in other academic activities such as the NEIU Student Research and Creative Activities Symposium

Eligibility:

Junior-level student (60+ hours completed at the time of application) or
Senior-level student (90+ hours completed at the time of application)

Demonstrate potential for having a successful career in the field of Communication
Minimum GPA of 3.4

Eligibility:

Junior-level student (60+ hours completed at the time of application) or

Demonstrate the potential to go into the fields of Communication, Media or Theatre at the graduate level or
Demonstrate the ability to go to the top of their field in media, family communication, or another area of Communication
Preference will be given to female applicants

Eligibility:

Junior-level student (60+ hours completed at the time of application) or
Senior-level student (who will not graduate before May 2025)

Demonstrate the potential to go into the field of Communication, Media and Theatre at the graduate level
Preference will be given to students who display an interest in Communication rather than Media or Theatre based on their academic transcripts

CMT Talent/Special Skills Scholarship

91Porn offers tuition scholarships to qualified students. A limited number of these scholarships are available through the Department of Communication, Media and Theatre. The tuition scholarship exempts the recipient from paying all or a portion of the tuition charge, depending on the size of the scholarship.

First-Time Applicants

CMT Talent and Special Skills Scholarship Application (Online form; sign in with Nmail account)

To qualify for consideration, applicants must:

Be accepted for admission to 91Porn.
Must be an undergraduate student. (Graduate students and students seeking a second bachelor's degree are not eligible.)
Submit two letters of recommendation from individuals active in the field of talent or special skills. The recommendations may be submitted by teachers from the student’s high school, 91Porn faculty members, faculty members of another college or university the student has attended, or from professionals active in any area of communication, media and/or theatre.
Submit a resume detailing experiences in any activity where you practiced skills related to communication, media and/or theatre.
Be willing to commit to the hours of participation each semester based on the following formula: For every one credit hour of tuition scholarship awarded, nine clock hours of participation in the Department of Communication, Media and Theatre as a talent scholar are required each semester. Example: If six credit hours are awarded, then 54 clock hours must be worked/documented.
Complete the application and submit all application documents through the Google Form.

Renewal Applicants

To qualify for renewal consideration, recipient must:

Complete the Renewal Application (Online form; sign in with Nmail account)
Remain in continuous attendance as a full-time or a part-time student.
Actively participate in the designated talent area by completing the required clock hours.
Maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average.

All Communication, Media and Theatre (CMT) majors and minors are assigned a primary academic advisor who can answer all advising questions. It is important that you meet with your advisor early and often. If you do not know who your academic advisor is, contact the CMT Department at cmt@neiu.edu.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I declare a CMT major or one of the minors offered by CMT?

Come to the CMT Department office (Room FA 240) and fill out a major (or minor) declaration form, or email cmt@neiu.edu. You will then be assigned an advisor in the CMT Department. Your advisor will work with you during your time as a CMT major or minor.

When should I take CMTC 305: Writing in Communication, Media and Theatre (WIP)?

It is best to take CMTC 305 as soon as possible. The course offers an overview of writing, and a theoretical overview of communication, media and theatre. As such, the sooner you take the course, the better prepared you will be in later, upper-division courses.

How and when should I apply for graduation?

First, print out a graduation application or pick one up from Enrollment Management Services in Room D 101. Then, set up a time to meet with your major (and if applicable, minor) advisor(s). If you expect to graduate in May, the deadline to submit the graduation application is the previous September; if you expect to graduate in August, the deadline is usually in January; if you expect to graduate in December, the deadline is usually in May. For example, if you expect to graduate in August 2023, the deadline to submit your graduation application is Jan. 18, 2023. If you expect to graduate in December 2023, the deadline to submit your graduation application is May 16, 2023. See graduation filing deadlines.

I completed my general education courses and my major requirements. Am I ready to graduate?

Not necessarily. The University has additional requirements you need to fulfill in order to earn a bachelor’s degree. View 91Porn’s graduation requirements.

Why can I register for some classes and not others?

There may be a few reasons. First, make sure you have completed the prerequisites to the class. If you have fulfilled the prerequisites, then see if the class is full. If the class if full, contact the instructor to see if they will authorize you to take the course or will put you on a waitlist.

What if I change my mind about a CMT major or minor?

If you change your mind, you need to either undeclare your major/minor or change your major/minor via a new declaration form in the CMT Department office (Room FA 240) or email cmt@neiu.edu.

Background

Chris has a wide range of artistic expertise ranging from stand-up comedy, to experimental film, to more serious documentary work. His thesis project for his M.A. at NEIU, "Tell Me About My Mother," (about his mother's struggles with extreme mental illness) won a few awards but, most importantly, has screened in front of classrooms and conventions of occupational therapists. His absurd comedic plays have been produced all around Chicago, including at Second City's DeMaat Theatre. His book, "Twenty Years Without a Weekend" recounts his unconventional path to becoming an expert in public speaking, by giving tours of the city of Chicago to tourists for over 20 years. Chris also has various television production experience, having worked with Big Shoulders Digital Video and other companies. Chris could go on. Chris likes writing about himself in the third person.

Dr. Samentha Sepúlveda’s research concentrates on the crossroads of organizational and internatural communication (communication with and about nature). Additionally, her research examines communication from a critical lens to discover how discourses maintain and challenge exploitation. By highlighting the oppressive practices maintained by these discourses, she also sheds light on linked oppression related to gender, race, class, and more.

Background

Matthew Sage has been active in counter-culture and subculture as a musician, artist, writer, publisher, and distributor for nearly 15 years. His autoethnographic research and experience in these fields has tied into his academic research interests involving intermedia arts, physical and digital media, and mediated narrative.

He operated Patient Sounds, an internationally acclaimed record label that published more than 140 cassettes, vinyl records, and books produced by artists from around the world in its 10 years of operation. He now operates Cached.Media, a platform sharing music, art objects, and web broadcasts exploring collaborative works made through digital mediation. He has published/shown music, writing, poetry, and visual art with many record labels, small press publishers and independent galleries. He has also performed, produced, recorded, and collaborated on works shown at The Art Institute of Chicago, The MOMA, MOMA PS1, the Whitney Museum.

Theatre as cultural currency, theatre for social change and dialogue, the social history of musical theatre, new play development models, representation, diversity, and inclusion in storytelling, and the theatrical history of Ireland. He is in the process of proposing a new book for professional actors and students that teaches a repeatable dialect process and dynamically connects that process to the creation of character.

Background

Adam is an accomplished director with a long history developing critically and nationally acclaimed new work. He brings credits and assistant credits at Steppenwolf, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Court Theatre, CityLit, Redtwist, The Side Project, Bristol Riverside Theatre, South Bend Civic Theatre, and leading companies across Chicago and the east coast. One of Chicago’s leading voice and dialect coaches, Adam has vocally designed nearly sixty productions in Chicago with his work praised by Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune as “remarkable."

As an arts leader, Adam has helped to build, shape, and support major institutions such as Bristol Riverside Theatre, Hartford Stage Company, and William Morris Endeavor. Adam previously taught at Columbia College Chicago and Northwestern University before joining Northeastern. In addition to his time on campus, Adam continues to serve young artists as the head of musical theatre at Actors Training Center in Wilmette. His other interests include his wife, young son, a dog and cat, baseball, golf, crossfit, and his amazing neighborhood in Evanston. MFA-Directing, Northwestern University, BFA-Acting from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
