GS 201 - Introductions to Global Studies I

This course introduces students to the multiple dimensions and impact of globalization as it is reflected across disciplines. Accordingly, we explore globalization through specific themes and approaches, including those of: 1) Culture, Society, and Identity; 2) Language, Knowledge, and Representation; 3) Power, Movements, and Political Economy; 4) Nature, Technology, and the Body; 5) Violence, Resistance, and Resolution. In this way, the course generates a comparative understanding of the significant implications arising in the wake of an increasingly globalized world.

GS 205 - Writing Intensive Program (WIP): Interdisciplinary Research and Writing

Interdisciplinary Research and Writing provides students with practical training in conducting research and writing effectively in an interdisciplinary field. Students will learn about the advantages and challenges of interdisciplinary scholarship through a series of stepped research and writing assignments, including literature searches and reviews, hands-on experimentation with field methods, and multiple formal and informal writing activities that guide students in creating rough drafts, conducting revisions, and producing polished work. The course serves students in all interdisciplinary fields.

GS 399 - Capstone: Global Studies

In this course students will examine and conduct research on global phenomena. We will read and debate a range of approaches to the study of the global, addressing both methodological and theoretical issues. Students will conduct individual research projects, working through all the stages from proposal to completed paper. As the capstone course for the Global Studies Program, the primary course goal is to provide students with practical experience in linking reading and discussion of published sources in Global Studies to the tasks of researching , analyzing, and writing about their own areas of interest in the field.

Research Interests

Benjamin’s research focuses upon the politics of race in the United States, especially as they intersect with entrepreneurship, consumerism, colonialism, and the U.S. policy toward the Caribbean. Benjamin has presented his research on the mainland U.S., Hawaii, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, and in the Caribbean. He has published several book reviews and a journal article. In early 2010, Benjamin, along with Dr. Gregory Hall, co-edited a book, "Eternal Colonialism," with the University Press of America. Benjamin will soon publish a book manuscript, "African Americans and Recent Policies Toward the Caribbean: Haiti, Cuba, and Puerto Rico," with Caribbean Studies Press.

Religion, healing, southern Africa, globalization, immigration, transportation
My research concerns the Christianized healing practices of the prophets of central Mozambique, a network of people possessed by biblical spirits who work to heal individual bodies afflicted with illness as well as social bodies recovering from the effects of warfare and dislocation. I recently collaborated on an edited volume about healing in southeastern Africa. The book addresses the important relationship between African healing practices and borders of various sorts, which healers both transgress and reify in the course of their work. I am also interested in material culture, especially the ways objects, buildings, and other materialities figure in healing practices.

Background

Martyn de Bruyn specializes in the study of comparative regional integration and institutional reform of the European Union (EU). He has written on federalism and constitutionalization in the European Union, direct democracy and the use of referendums to ratify EU treaties. Another strain of his research focuses on EU external relations with a focus on East Asia. He has written on European confidence and trust-building experiences and the implications for the inter-Korean relations, inter regionalism and the EU as global player.

His work has been published in Asia Europe Journal, Contemporary Political Society, The Journal of Contemporary European Studies, and On Korea. He serves as an international editorial board member of Contemporary Political Society. His current research, titled “The European Union, Japan, and the Elusive Global Human Security Partnership,” is included in an edited volume, Human Security, Changing States and Global Responses: Institutions and Practices.

The Global Studies Program at 91Porn is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program that offers a major leading to the Global Studies B.A. as well as a minor.

In Global Studies classes, students investigate and analyze life in a globalized world from cultural, economic, political, and other perspectives.

The program is organized around five thematic tracks:

Culture, Society and Identity
Language, Knowledge and Representation
Nature, Technology and the Body
Power, Movements and Political Economy
Violence, Resistance and Resolution

These tracks transcend traditional disciplinary, topical, and theoretical borders, providing opportunities for creative thinking, critical debate, and novel scholarship.

Through critical analysis of the contemporary world, carried out in coursework and through hands-on research and internship opportunities, students in the program accrue knowledge, scholarly abilities, and practical skills that will prepare them as informed global citizens and members of the 21st century workforce.

Global Studies prepares its students to be the next generation of global leaders in business, education, government, and scholarly research, who will take on the complex cultural, political, economic, environmental, medical, legal and other issues of our day. The Global Studies curriculum provides skills and experiences that are key qualifications in the current job market, including critical research, analysis, writing, and foreign language skills, and the knowledge and intellectual capacity to engage effectively and productively with pressing issues of contemporary relevance. Research and internship experiences enhance classroom learning and are especially important for students interested in Global Studies. There are a variety of hands-on opportunities both in Chicago and internationally, for which Global Studies students can receive credit toward the major and minor, including:

ANTH 3793: Pan-African Association Internship: 3 or 6 cr., The internship will entail a one-semester (for 3 credit hours) or two-semester (for 6 credit hours) commitment on the part of interested students, during which time the student will work 10 hours per week for the Pan-African Association. The goal of the NEIU-PAA Internship program is to (1) provide high-achieving Northeastern students with the opportunity to learn about the experiences of refugees in the U.S. and gain experience in the work of refugee resettlement service organizations while serving their community, and (2) to provide PAA with committed, hardworking students who can serve the goals of the organization and the needs of its clients.

Requirements: Northeastern students interested in participating in the internship program must have a 3.0 GPA, must have completed ANTH 212: Intro Cultural Anth or GS201: Intro Global Studies (or another comparable course with the NEIU Internship Coordinator’s permission) with a grade of C or better, and must complete an application/interview process during the semester before they intend to begin an internship. Students will be selected for the internship from among the pool of applicants on a competitive basis.

AFAM 303: Global Collaborations: Cross-Cultural Research in Ghana: 4 cr., is an in-depth, interdisciplinary, international research experience. Students spend four weeks in Ghana, West Africa and engage in collaborative research projects with Ghanaian students at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). The course is an opportunity for students to experience Ghanaian culture while also engaging in exciting scholarly and creative projects.

Additional research, internship, and service learning courses may also be used toward the Global Studies major or minor, by permission of the coordinator.
