Research Interests

Mendoza’s current research is rooted in Rasquachismo, an attitude and a sensibility, and secondarily a set of formal art qualities. His use of appropriated materials which are borrowed from a day-to-day context, he presents everyday objects as well as references to texts, paintings and drawings. Pompous writings and Utopian constructivist designs are juxtaposed with the trivial awkwardness of frustration, sexual desires, and archaic tropes that demonstrate how the self and other extend beyond their own subjective limits, cannibal versus civilized selves.

Background

Dr. Pulido’s research is interdisciplinary and works to expand the scholarly literature in the fields of education, youth culture, and Latina/o Studies by examining how youth navigate schooling through their particular social and cultural lenses. Her research provides an alternative perspective to much of the recent literature on urban schooling framed by a discourse surrounding testing, standardization of curriculum, and accountability, and instead focuses on developing an understanding of how youths’ multi-layered identities converge and diverge with the processes of schooling in ways that affect academic achievement.

Research Interests

My research focuses on the Sociology of HIV/AIDS, Social Inequality, and Social Movements. I am especially interested in how multiple inequalities (racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, etc.) intersect and how oppressed groups respond to and resist these inequalities. For my first book, Activism Against AIDS: At the Intersections of Sexuality, Race, Gender, and Class (Lynne Rienner Press, 2003), I interviewed AIDS activists in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York, and I conducted participant observation in ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power)/Chicago—a direct action AIDS activist group. I examine how inequalities have shaped the AIDS crisis and how LGBTQ people, people of color, prisoners and other groups have organized collectively to combat HIV/AIDS. For my second book, Transforming the Ivory Tower: Challenging Racism, Sexism and Homophobia in the Academy (University of Hawai’i Press, 2012), Mary Yu Danico and I edited an anthology that highlights how professors identify forms of bias and discrimination in higher education as well as forge antiracist, feminist and queer approaches to teaching and mentoring, research and writing, and social justice work. Some of my other publications are listed below. My research and teaching are informed by my experiences as a queer HIV-positive activist. I have been a participant in campus and community activism for free speech and against the AIDS crisis, homophobia, racism and militarism.

Latina/o and Latin American Studies is an interdisciplinary approach to the histories, cultures, societies, languages and politics of Latin America and Latina/os. It explores the relationship of Latin America and Latina/os to each other, to the United States and to the world.

91Porn is a four-year public university in the Midwest federally designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution, and as such our Latina/o and Latin American Studies Program (LLAS) builds on the University’s commitment to diversity and community partnerships. We strive to combine classroom learning and active involvement in the community. LLAS classes are taught by faculty from an array of disciplines in education, the social sciences and humanities, who are committed to active learning through discussion, research and community engagement.

LLAS offers a 36-credit-hour major. After foundational preparation in both Latina/o and Latin American studies, students will choose to complete their major with a concentration in either Latina/o studies or Latin American studies. LLAS also offers an 18-credit-hour minor.

Careers

LLAS prepares students for careers in education, transformative and restorative justice, cultural preservation, community building and healing, and collaborative work. The vast majority of students who earn degrees in LLAS attend professional or graduate school.

General Education Requirement

Our LLAS-101 Introduction to Latina/o and Latin American Studies course fulfills a Social/Behavioral requirement for the NEIU General Education Program.

Events

The Latina/o and Latin American Studies program sponsors events that promote its mission and enrich the University community. We often co-sponsor events with other University programs that share our values and mission.

This course will focus on improving your writing skills while applying your sociological imagination to the topic of immigration. We will examine different sociological factors that shape the experiences of immigrants living in the United States and globally. There will be special emphases on immigrant health care and immigrant activism. This course satisfies the university’s Writing Intensive Program requirement and is required for all Sociology majors; it serves as an elective for Sociology minors as well as LLAS majors and minors.

Research Interests

Dr. Olivia Nichole Perlow is a professor of the Department of Sociology, African & African American Studies, Latino/a/x and Latin American Studies, and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at 91Porn. Her specializations are social inequalities, critical carceral studies, and liberatory pedagogies. Most of her work comes out of a critical race (black) feminist framework in which she examines intersecting oppressions based on race, class, gender, sexuality, and so forth. She is the published author of multiple articles, book chapters, and co-editor of the anthology Black Women's Liberatory Pedagogies: Resistance, Transformation and Healing Within and Beyond the Academy. She is a proud triple alumna of Howard University, where her political trajectory was fermented, and an activist who continues to challenge the varied and multi-faceted oppressions faced by marginalized/minoritized groups, particularly in the areas of criminal (in)justice and education.
