Most often, questions arise when a student uses a tape recorder. College teachers may believe recording lectures is an infringement upon their own or other students' academic freedom, or constitutes copyright violation.

The instructor may not forbid a student's use of an aid if that prohibition limits the student's participation in the school program. The Section 504 regulation states:

“A recipient may not impose upon handicapped students other rules, such as the prohibition of tape recorders in classrooms or of dog guides in campus buildings, that have the effect of limiting the participation of handicapped students in the recipient's education program or activity. “

In order to allow a student with a disability the use of an effective aid and, at the same time, protect the instructor, the institution may require the student to sign an agreement so as not to infringe on a potential copyright or to limit freedom of speech.

ADA AND 91Porn

Recordings shall be used for private study only. Students must receive prior approval from the Office of Disability Services to use a recorder during lectures as an accommodation. Students who wish to use a device to record lectures for other uses such as: publications, transcriptions, duplications, etc. must obtain written approval from their instructor prior for that specific purpose. Any use of recordings without the instructor’s approval constitutes academic misconduct and may result in suspension or expulsion.

The Copyright Law, 17 U.S.C. 101–1332 & CT (Legal) protects the intellectual property of the instructor which includes: lectures, demonstrations, and performances therefore, faculty reserve the right to disallow recording of some classroom and presentations by students.

In case of a dispute, the student’s request for permission to record lectures shall be directed to the chair of the department. If further action is needed, the student shall be referred to the Dean of the Department, and the Student Disability Services Director.

Recording Agreement Form

Students who violate college policy will not be allowed to use a recording device as an accommodation.

Fri, 15 Mar 2019 15:56:52 +0000 Fernando Riascos 84556 at Giving to SDS /university-life/disability-services/giving-sds

Giving to SDS

mbrown68 Thu, 07/12/2018 - 15:29

Student Disability Services

Removing Barriers

Access to opportunity, diversity and empowerment through education are values at the core of Northeastern’s work. In Student Disability Services, these values are carried forward every day as we strive to not only fulfill federal regulations for reasonable accommodation, but to provide a fuller, equal university experience for our students.

Donations help us address individualized needs and improve the campus climate for students with disabilities. The reasonable accommodation in this case is to provide a personal note-taker. However, a note-taker does not allow for real-time participation in the lesson. For this, our student needed assistive technology. Using charitable donations, we purchased a device that took the image on the board and enlarged it directly to her laptop. She has since graduated with her degree in Mathematics.

Northeastern comes alive with cultural events and activities throughout the academic year. A hard-of-hearing student wanted to attend a performance on campus, for which the reasonable accommodation is to provide a sign language interpreter. However, to help her fully participate in the experience, SDS was able to purchase an FM hearing device that cancelled out background noise and amplified the speaker’s voice. She and other hard-of-hearing students now have this option as they take advantage of our many cultural events.

Donate Now

Thu, 12 Jul 2018 20:29:49 +0000 mbrown68 80891 at Information and Training for Notetakers /university-life/disability-services/information-and-training-notetakers

Information and Training for Notetakers

mbrown68 Mon, 06/18/2018 - 15:38

Welcome and thank you for signing up to be a notetaker for Student Disability Services! To receive more time beyond that, the student must submit documentation showing that your disability does not allow you to finish within the time allotted by SDS. The Director of Student Disability Services makes the determination on these types of requests.

What is the purpose of extended time?

The purpose of extended time is to put you on par with the rest of your classmates. In other words, your extra time is not an advantage, but a way for you to finish your exams without your disability impacting your ability to demonstrate your knowledge under time constraints.

Can an instructor give me extended time?

Yes, however, keep in mind what the instructor gives is not transferable to another class. That extended time was granted as a courtesy.

How can I increase my extended time on exams?

Email the director for steps to take to increase your extended time.

Do I have to fill out an Exam Appointment Request Form for every test and quiz I want to take in the SDS testing room?

Yes. Please go to the exam scheduling request form. Please be advised that the office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Requests received after office hours, during the weekend or a holiday, will be addressed when the office reopens.

Why can't I bring my belongings, and cell phone into the testing room in cases where I might be expecting an emergency phone call?

To ensure the integrity of the exam, we ask that students leave behind all belongings that could give them an unfair advantage over their classmates. We ask that you make arrangements with others to let them know when and where you will be testing, and to call SDS if there is an emergency.

QuickLinks

Twitter

Mon, 18 Jun 2018 20:30:43 +0000 mbrown68 79586 at Useful Resources /university-life/disability-services/faq/useful-resources

Useful Resources

mbrown68 Mon, 06/18/2018 - 15:19

TRIO Student Support Services
Ronald Williams Library, LIB 412
(773) 442-4971

TRIO seeks to support qualified first generation, low income Northeastern students and Northeastern students with disabilities by providing academic and career advising, college success workshops, advocacy, tutoring, mentoring, financial literacy, and priority registration.

Learning Success Center
Ronald Williams Library, LIB 454
(773) 442-4568

The Learning Success Center (LSC) provides peer-based tutoring for students completing General Education or Math Development Courses, and assistance with writing assignments for all disciplines.

Student Health Services
E 051 (Underneath the bookstore)
(773) 442-5800

Student Health Services provides a wide array of wellness, illness, and health promotion services for our students.
