The 2024 NEIU Faculty Institute welcomes all faculty to the main campus for a day of professional renewal. This year's program is titled Inspiring Student Learning Through Passion, Purpose and Partnership, and takes place from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 22, 2024.

This year’s Faculty Institute offers the opportunity for engaged discussion around student success. Interactive breakout sessions will be offered, as well; they are designed to include innovative faculty teaching and learning strategies designed to appeal across the disciplines. There are also opportunities to celebrate the accomplishments of our distinguished award recipients. Come join us to welcome new colleagues, and celebrate newly tenured faculty and distinguished award recipients.

The 2023 Faculty Institute welcomes all faculty to the Main Campus for two half-days of professional renewal. This year's program, Cultivating Our Humanity in Times of Transition, features keynote speakers Annie Murphy Paul and Brandon P. Fleming.

Annie Murphy Paul is the author of "The Extended Mind: The Power of Thinking Outside the Brain" and is an acclaimed science writer whose work has appeared in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, Scientific American, Slate, Time magazine, and The Best American Science Writing, among many other publications.

Brandon P. Fleming is a renowned speaker, nationally acclaimed educator, and author of MISEDUCATED: A Memoir. His triumphant story of struggle, success, and service has captured the heart of national media and inspired millions of people around the world.

Breakout sessions include innovative faculty teaching and learning strategies and opportunities to celebrate the accomplishments of our distinguished award recipients.

The Center for Teaching and Learning offers innovative solutions to faculty who want to further their professional development, refine their teaching skills, and apply an array of research-based instructional technologies to support and enhance their students' learning.

Mission

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) provides an exceptional environment for learning, teaching and research by working directly with faculty members to improve their teaching practices, experiment with new instructional formats, and apply educational technologies in their classes.

Vision

The CTL will be the University hub for faculty learning, sharing and collaboration regarding their teaching practices. The CTL will foster an NEIU faculty directly engaged in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), where classroom practices are a valued and rich source of shared information.

Core Strategies

The CTL engages in five core strategies in order to achieve its vision:

Increase collaboration with related faculty and student-support areas across campus, including University Technology Services, the Registrar, the Learning Centers, and Academic Affairs.
Expand the reach of the CTL by including more faculty members as peer facilitators for CTL programming and as peer mentors.
Institutionalize Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) practices and showcase them in University-wide events, while integrating them with ongoing accreditation efforts.
Expand the learning opportunities for faculty with training and workshops offered in face-to-face, hybrid, online, and self-paced formats.
Increase the visibility of exemplary teaching practices, both on campus and to external audiences.

Supportive Practices

The CTL offers support to full- and part-time faculty who want to:

Refine their teaching skills
Experiment with new instructional formats
Apply educational technologies in their classes

The CTL provides workshops, educational software training, resources, and individual consultations. We offer advice, resources, and a forum for discussion to help faculty to transform the lives of students, their families and their communities by offering the best education possible.
