What do I earn?

A content minor in Math and Science Concepts (MSTQE) and endorsements in Mathematics and Science (with the option of adding Social Studies and Language Arts)

How are courses structured?

Courses are taught in a block schedule and are to be taken concurrently to demonstrate interdisciplinary connections. Courses are taught through inquiry and experience based learning, direct instruction, modeling and individual/collaborative research. The various teaching styles of the MSTQE faculty reflect the model that is most successful in classrooms and working with diverse adolescents.

What is MSTQE?

MSTQE is a minor program and cohort of students looking to teach math and science. Education majors may use the minor to meet the content course requirements of the Illinois State Board of Education in math, life and physical science. In addition, the Math and Science Concepts minor is accepted by the Goodwin College of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences as a recognized content minor.

What is expected of me?

As part of the MSTQE cohort, you are considered to be professional in a field of education and treated as such. In addition to scheduled class time, students are expected to participate in meaningful professional developments, service learning and advisories until completion of the program.

What is a "Bridge" program?

Students who are part of Wright or Truman City Colleges of Chicago can register through their identified college, pay City Colleges prices but attend class at NEIU. All courses fulfill University general education requirements in math and science and MSTQE minor requirements, and students are able to use the courses to fulfill associate degree requirements. If you are not part of the “bridge” partnership but are registered through the City Colleges of Chicago, please email mstqe@neiu.edu.

Do I need to apply to the MSTQE minor program?

No. There is no formal application. In order to be eligible, you must have completed English 101 and have earned a C or better and make an appointment to see the MSTQE Program Advisor at mstqe@neiu.edu.

Do I need to be in The GOODWIN College of Education in order to be a part of MSTQE?

No. You may be a part of the MSTQE minor program at any point in your college journey. You can take MSTQE courses concurrently with University general education courses and/or Goodwin College of Education professional courses.

MSTQE is designed for undergraduate students interested in developing deep and broad-based literacy in math, physical and life sciences, and technology. Most students in the program major in education and many elect to become teachers of math and general science. Others go on to teach in informal education, in museums, libraries, environmental education and other venues.

The structure of the MSTQE program is unique in that it is a “bridge” partnership with the City Colleges of Chicago. Faculty and students from Wright College, Truman College, and other campuses come to NEIU to teach and study together. The goal is to create a pipeline of diverse candidates who become effective teachers of math, science, and technology.

Getting Started in MSTQE

Students may demonstrate that they are eligible for MSTQE by completing Math 121 (MATH-149) and Math 122 (MATH-150) with a grade of C or better. Recommendations and referrals from math instructors will also be considered.
Students must be eligible to take (or have completed) ENGL-101 or have a recommendation from an English instructor.
Students complete an advising appointment with the MSTQE Program director and commit to participate in all program requirements.

If you are interested in improving your math and science skills while increasing your marketability in finding a teaching job after graduation, consider the Math & Science Concepts minor (also known as MSTQE). To speak with an advisor about an individualized course plan to fulfill requirements of the MSTQE minor, contact mstqe@neiu.edu. Students pursuing a B.A. in Elementary, Middle Level, or other education major, please contact the Goodwin College of Education (GCOE) Undergraduate Advisor that corresponds with your major for further support with General Education and GCOE requirements.

The MSTQE program emphasizes observation, mathematical reasoning, scientific inquiry, technology, collaborative group work, connections to real-world problems, and service learning. The courses in the program focus on both content knowledge and pedagogy.

The MSTQE program fully embraces diversity as a valuable resource, strength, and asset. Students are encouraged to voice their opinions, suggestions, and perspectives for strengthening and improving the program. The program is inclusive and respectful, which allows us to create equity in our learning experiences and teaching practices by developing leadership skills at all levels. Students finish the program highly qualified to advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion as future teachers of math, science, and technology. The MSTQE program utilizes culturally relevant pedagogy and incorporates issues of equity and social justice into coursework.

MSTQE Eligibility

Prepare for a career in teaching math and science through Northeastern’s MSTQE program.

The Math and Science Concepts minor, also known as Math, Science and Technology for Quality Education (MSTQE), is designed to develop a community of undergraduate students who share interests in interdisciplinary STEM fields. With a strong commitment to preparing pre-service teachers to teach math and general science at the elementary and middle level, the program will help students develop deep and broad literacy in math, physical and life sciences, and technology.

To speak with an advisor about creating a course plan to fulfill requirements of the MSTQE minor, contact mstqe@neiu.edu. Students pursuing a bachelor's in Elementary Education, Middle Level Education or other education major should contact the Goodwin College of Education (GCOE) Undergraduate Advisor that corresponds with the major for further support with general education and GCOE requirements.

In partnership with Wilbur Wright College, any City Colleges of Chicago student may participate in science and math courses at 91Porn while earning their associate's degree.

For community college students, MSTQE courses they take at Northeastern:

can be applied toward their associate degree
fulfill general education requirements in math and science
fulfill the Math and Science Concepts minor requirements

It is our commitment to prepare our students to be able to effectively teach K-8 students in math and science. The MSTQE program offers courses that cover the content they will be responsible to teach and opportunities to create interdisciplinary projects that show the connection between math and science.

Math and Science Concepts, Minor

The Math and Science Concepts minor (MSTQE) is designed for undergraduate students interested in developing deep and broad-based literacy in math, physical and life sciences and technology.

MSTQE is a consortium program in which faculty and students from Wright College, Truman College and 91Porn teach and study together. The goal of the consortium is to build community connections and create a pipeline of diverse teachers who will connect to and engage students in achieving STEM (science, technology, engineering, math).

An important feature of the program is that the math and science courses are taught as pairs with content and instruction that is linked and interdisciplinary. The integrated math and science course pairs provide students with opportunities to interact with professors and classmates to investigate and co-construct knowledge. All of the courses provide students with the opportunity to think about how the math and science content they are studying could be used to make the teaching and learning of math and science as future educators both engaging and effective.

In the Math and Science Concepts minor, you can:
