New programs

Beginning Fall 2019, the Daniel L. Goodwin College of Education will offer three new non-degree programs:

  • The Public Health Graduate Certificate, in the Department of Health Sciences and Physical Education, is an 18-credit-hour program designed to meet the needs of professionals seeking to gain supplemental knowledge in public health.
  • The Certificate in Couple and Family Counseling, in the Department of Counselor Education, is an 18-credit-hour program providing specialized training for counseling students and counseling professionals interested in applying evidence-based systemic theory, assessment and intervention to their work with individuals, couples and families.
  • The School Counselor Endorsement, Non-Degree, in the Department of Counselor Education, is a 21-credit-hour program with a Professional Educator License and 33-credit-hour program without a Professional Educator License that allows those who hold a graduate degree in counseling or closely-related fields to become eligible for an endorsement as a school counselor in Illinois.

  • Northeastern will host a One Stop Enrollment Express from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. June 11 in Alumni Hall. Departments from across the University will come together to help students prepare for the fall semester.
  • Northeastern will host information sessions for the Gerontology master's program at 4:30 p.m. June 12 at El Centro and from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. June 15 at the Carruthers Center.
  • Linguistics Professor Richard Hallett presented a paper titled “Fractal recursivity and erasure in tourist phrasebooks” during the 64th Annual Conference of the , which took place May 30-June 1 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Upon Hallett’s recommendation, master’s student submitted an abstract to the conference based on her research for class. The abstract was accepted, and she presented “Language use: How can sociolinguistic landscapes, community identity, and cultural contact impact one’s evolution of language?”
  • Assistant Professor of English Ryan Poll published an article titled “’” in PopMatters.

School board appointments

Two of Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s seven new school board appointees are alumni of Northeastern, reported. Board President Miguel Del Valle earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northeastern, and board member Dwayne Truss earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.

‘Saving Democracy’

The Department of English is co-sponsoring an event titled Saving Democracy Town Hall: The Importance of a Free & Fair Press with Common Cause Illinois. The forum is intended to address political events and issues of good government. The featured speaker is former Federal Communications Commissioner Michael Copps, and the panelists are Shia Kapos of Politico and Jen Sabella of local news startup BlockClub Chicago. The event is free and open to the public.

‘Flamenco Passion’

Ensemble Español will host “Flamenco Passion: A Tribute to Dame Libby Komaiko” featuring their popular live dance and music performances as part of the company’s 43rd American Spanish Dance & Music Festival from June 14-16. The performances are in honor of founder Libby Komaiko, who passed away earlier this year. The “Flamenco Passion” performances will feature more than 40 dancers and musicians, including guest artists in a fusion of classical, folkloric, traditional, contemporary and flamenco styles.
