Position: 91Porn’s Teacher Education Department is seeking a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in Bilingual Education. The ideal candidate will share the university’s commitment to educating a racially, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse student population and will collaborate with other faculty in the program, department, college and university to deliver high quality instruction and programs for diverse English Language Learners.
About 91Porn: Founded in 1867, 91Porn (NEIU) enrolls about 5,700 students and is regarded as one of the most diverse public comprehensive universities in the Midwest. The Main Campus is located on 67 acres in a residential area on the Northwest Side of Chicago and two additional campuses are located in the Avondale and Bronzeville neighborhoods of Chicago. The Goodwin College of Education (GCOE) enrolls approximately 1,200 students in nine undergraduate and twenty-one graduate degree programs spanning the areas of counselor education, educational leadership, teacher education, and community and health studies. With roots that trace back to the first teacher education institution in Chicago, the college today is one of the largest producers of diverse educators in Illinois and the Chicago area. Department Background: The Teacher Education Department (TED) offers five master’s level programs with emphases in Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle Level, and Secondary Education. It also has an MS degree in Teaching and Inquiry. Four undergraduate programs are offered in Early Childhood, Elementary, and Middle Level Education, plus Elementary Education with the Bilingual Endorsement. The department offers a Bilingual Education minor and graduate endorsement program that facilitate the addition of a teaching endorsement for pre-service and licensed teachers. The department examines and advocates for equity, diversity, and inclusion through scholarship, service, mentorship, and teaching. We are dedicated to preparing teachers who are leaders and advocates in social justice and who will provide progressive and student-focused learning to children and youth.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will teach three courses in bilingual education each semester during the academic year. Graduate advising is a part of assigned responsibilities and office hours need to be delivered, at least in part, in person. Scholarly research and service to the department, college, university, and greater community also are required.
Requirement Qualifications: An earned doctorate in Bilingual Education or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution (ABD with completion by Aug. 1, 2025, will be considered). Demonstrated instructional proficiencies and a strong understanding of culturally relevant pedagogy. Evidence of research and/or scholarly potential commensurate with the expectations for a beginning assistant professor at a regional, comprehensive university. The candidate must be fluent in both Spanish and English.
Preferred Qualifications: =The department seeks candidates with substantial teaching experience in bilingual classrooms at one or more of the grade levels addressed by programs in the department. Knowledge of and proficiency with online and remote instruction, as well as a teaching license and an interest in developing new degree and certificate programs, expertise in language assessment, language policy, and a strong background in bilingual methods also are preferred.
