Library Laptop Terms and Conditions
Eligibility
- Laptops are available to currently enrolled NEIU students only. Laptop use is non-transferrable.
- If a student drops all their courses in a given semester, the student is responsible for returning the borrowed laptop immediately or the laptop will be considered lost/stolen.
- At check out, all students must present 1) a valid government-issued ID and 2) proof of current enrollment.
Get Started
- Reservations for a laptop are first come, first served.
- Students may check for available equipment on our .
- After reserving an available laptop through our website, you must make an appointment to pick up the laptop. Please contact libtechdesk@neiu.edu or use our to make arrangements.
- The Laptop Loan service is generally available from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Loan Periods and Limits
Long-Term Laptops
- Subject to availability, laptops may be borrowed for half a semester, with an option to renew and keep the same machine through the end of the semester.
- To renew long-term laptop loans, laptops must be physically "checked-in" with the Library Tech Desk before the initial mid-semester due date.
- Students taking courses exclusively online, at CCICS, or El Centro may arrange a virtual check-in at mid-semester.
- No laptop may be renewed beyond one (1) semester.
Short-Term Laptops
- Subject to availability, laptops may be borrowed for fourteen (14) days, with no option to renew.
- No laptop may be checked out for more than fourteen (14) days, unless converted to a long-term loan after Spring Break, subject to student verification.
Short-Term to Long-Term Loan Conversion Option
- After Spring Break, students with a history of prompt and timely returns may have their short-term loan converted to a long-term loan. This will allow them to keep the laptop through the end of the semester.
- Students can contact the NEIU Library Tech Desk at libtechdesk@neiu.edu after Spring Break to verify their eligibility for the loan conversion.
Returns
In-Person Returns
- For in-person service, appointments are required for laptop returns. Please contact libtechdesk@neiu.edu or use our to schedule an appointment for returns.
- Equipment will be inspected at the time of return, and you will be immediately notified of any issues or damage.
After Hours Returns
- Outside of regular NEIU Library Tech Desk hours, students may visit our Main Campus Circulation Desk to return laptops to self-service lockers.
Liability and Damages
- All components of the laptop must be returned in order to be considered fully checked in.
- After the Library’s reasonable attempts to recover overdue equipment fail, laptops will be presumed lost. To avoid University sanctions and criminal prosecution, the equipment must be returned immediately or the replacement fee paid in full pursuant to the State of Illinois and University Property Control Policy F1.09.
- The replacement fee for a laptop is $1,544, and the replacement fee for the cord is $35.
Data Management and Release of Liability
- The NEIU Library is not responsible for any liability, damages or expense resulting from use or misuse of the device, connection of the device to other electronic devices, or data loss resulting from use of the device.
- Documents or downloads will be wiped from the laptop once it is returned to the library.
Device Usage Guidelines and Restrictions
- This equipment will be used for University-related educational purposes only and in accordance with state and University policies.
- Only the NEIU Library Tech Desk may provide technical service for the device.
- Tampering with library equipment, including security functions, is prohibited.
Lending Conditions and Termination of Agreement
- The Library reserves the right to refuse to lend a laptop to anyone who abuses equipment or is repeatedly late in returning electronic devices.
- The NEIU Libraries reserve the right to terminate this agreement at any time and for any reason.
