Professor Tsonchev’s current research is focused on self-assembly of biologically-active macromolecules such as peptide amphiphiles which assemble to form scaffolds intended for tissue regeneration. He is developing new mathematical models and algorithms to study the stability of such systems and to make possible their design based on certain desired characteristics of the final structures that they form. This work is done in collaboration with colleagues from Northwestern University and Loyola University. Another project on which he is working on involves imaging Bacteriophytochromes (Bphs) using scanning probe microscopy techniques. This project is done in collaboration with Ken Nicholson (Chemistry) and Emina Stojkovic (Biology) from NEIU. Their goal is to study the conformational changes between the light-adapted and dark-adapted states of the Bphs, which are used, for example, as light switches controlling the metabolism of bacteria. Professor Tsonchev has also done work on the statistical mechanics of polyelectrolytes and on polymer translocation through narrow pores. He has studied the dynamics of quantum dissipation and the quantum theory of confined systems.

Research Interests
Environmental Chemistry & Surface Analytical Chemistry; My research interests lie in using scanning probe microscopy to investigate the environmental response characteristics of a class of red-light photoreceptors, specifically bacteriophytochromes. The SPM will be used to determine if there is a connection between the molecular structure of the photoreceptor and the magnitude of its fluorescence emission quantum yield. Both wild-type and engineered fluorescent mutants will be examined. I am also interested in identifying and quantifying petroleum based pollutants and additives in natural water systems, the transport of these pollutants from their source(s), and potential methods of remediation. This project involves field work, on-site analysis, and laboratory experiments, particularly chromatography.

Research Interests
My current research focuses on studying how plastic materials degrade when exposed to sunlight. This will help to understand how harmful microplastic particles are formed when plastic waste is dumped in natural water systems, as well as to develop ways of remediating the plastic waste. Inorganic photocatalytic materials are being investigated as possible targets to speed up the breakdown of plastic waste and allow it to be recycled more efficiently before it causes environmental harm. Computational modeling programs are also being used predict the pathways of plastic degradation and calculate the energetics of the process under different conditions. In the future, I plan to have a joint research project with Biology studying microbes that are able to "eat" plastic waste as another means of recycling it.
