Introduction

The major in Special Education is designed to prepare undergraduate candidates to become highly proficient in the delivery of instruction and services to all school aged children and adolescents with exceptionalities. The undergraduate program consists of 72 credit hours total.

The Special Education program is nationally accredited by the Council for Exceptional Children.

The Special Education major programs are offered at both the Main Campus and El Centro.

Completion of the Bachelor of Arts in Special Education will satisfy all standards for teacher licensure as required by the Illinois State Board of Education. 91Porn has not made a determination as to whether this education degree program meets the educational requirements for licensure or certification in any of the other 54 U.S. states and jurisdictions. Specific requirements for licensure or certification in states other than Illinois vary from state-to-state. The Department of Special Education has a strong reputation for preparing quality special education teachers in Chicago and the surrounding area over the last 20 years. Graduates from Department programs enter K-12 schools prepared to meet the needs of diverse learners and to address critical issues in the field.

In order to obtain Illinois state teaching credentials, candidates must ensure all program coursework is completed prior to student teaching. Additionally students must have a passing score on the required ILTS content exam #290 and meet acceptable evaluations of dispositions and professional behaviors.
