KNowing while black: Deconstructing white lies and surviving an anti-black World

Thursday, March 21
3:05-5:00 p.m.
Main Campus, Room BBH 101

Dr.  will deliver this year's Philosophy Department's Inspiring TriVia Lecture. "This talk details a socio-epistemic practice that I have dubbed 'knowing while Black', a strategic practice that Black individuals have utilized as a means of survival in anti-Black societies. Building upon Patricia Hill Collins’ conceptual framework for resisting malicious epistemic frameworks ("oppositional knowledge”), I propose Black epistemic agents are uniquely equipped to identify and dismantle white ignorance and white lies. This, I argue, will then allow the marginalized also to resist the negative social imaginations that fuel harmful dominant epistemic frameworks as well as the need to appeal for recognition from the oppressive subjects who implement these harmful ways of knowing."

Sister Talk is an affinity space developed to create sisterhood (not cis-terhood) among NEIU students, faculty and staff where BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) identified women/femmes are centered and affirmed in their identities. The Pedroso Center believes stories bind us to each other. The use of a semesterly book club will help create a structure where students are encouraged to critically think, engage in literary discussion, share and deeply listen to one another’s stories.

This semester’s book is "Abolition. Feminism. Now." In this remarkable collaborative work, leading scholar-activists Angela Y. Davis, Gina Dent, Beth E. Richie and NEIU’s own Erica R. Meiners engage in conversation around the often unrecognized genealogies of queer, anti-capitalist, internationalist, grassroots and women-of-color-led feminist movements, struggles and organizations that have helped to define abolition and feminism in the 21st century.
